About Geographic Information System Department
A Geographical Information System (GIS) is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to a specific physical location.
For the Town of Bernalillo, the system is the designated data platform and secured repository for data (and maps) related to our roads, addresses, road signs, water system (including isolation valves), hydrants, water meters, wastewater system, utility systems, flood zones, town boundaries, parcel and ownership information.
This system is also the data source and integration point for the new TOB Fire and Rescue ‘Onscene’ mobile system that will provide that department with current and dynamically updated information for either fire or rescue calls.
Goals
-
One common consistent technical platform for all TOB infrastructure and other municipal data – vehicle for archiving and reproduction of historical survey, construction and other planning and zoning maps.
-
Meet current federal/state required foundation for E911 road and address data – Provide transition to NG911 (Next Generation 911 - Homeland Security)
-
Exchange of data with residents, neighboring municipalities, county, state and federal agencies using industry standard formats.
-
Migration of key TOB departments (P&Z, Community Development, Public Works, etc.) onto processes and equipment that leverages the TOB GIS geodatabases and map archives, improves communications and reduces paper files.
